The APTA recognizes Dry needling (DN) is a skilled intervention used by physical therapists (where allowed by state law) that uses a thin filiform needle to penetrate the skin and stimulate underlying myofascial trigger points, muscular, and connective tissues for the management of neuromusculoskeletal pain and movement impairments.  The APTA recognizes dry needling as being part of the physical therapy.

Dry Needling Treatments

DN may be incorporated into a treatment plan when myofascial TrPs are present, which may lead to impairments in body structure, pain, and functional limitations. TrPs are sources of persistent peripheral nociceptive input and their inactivation is consistent with current pain management insights.  DN also is indicated with restrictions in range of motion due to contractured muscle fibers or taut bands, or other soft tissue restrictions, such as fascial adhesions or scar tissue. TrPs have been identified in numerous diagnoses, such as radiculopathies, joint dysfunction, disc pathology, tendonitis, craniomandibular dysfunction, migraines, tension-type headaches, carpal tunnel syndrome, computer-related disorders, whiplash associated disorders, spinal dysfunction, pelvic pain and other urologic syndromes, post-herpetic neuralgia, complex regional pain syndrome, nocturnal cramps, phantom pain, and other relatively

This course is designed for Physical Therapists who are seeking to expand their knowledge about Dry Needling and its applications.  This is Module 2 of a 2 part series consisting of a 3 day seminar with a focus on the cervical, shoulder, and upper extremity dry needling.

Dry Needling treatment has been shown to be effective for excessive muscle tension, scar tissue, fascia, and connective tissues.  Scar tissue has also been linked to myofascial pain and fibroblasts.  Dry Needling may play a substantial role in the process of mechanotransduction, which is described as the process by which the body converts mechanical loading into cellular responses.  Fibroblast activation with a solid filament has been shown to result in pain neuromodulation via DN.

The Physical Therapist will learn how certain neural pathways are activated upon filiform needle insertion.  In addition, they will gain knowledge of how these pathways affect neurotransmitters, endorphins, dynorphins, enkephalins, and cytokine release in the treatment of acute and chronic pain to name a few.  Practitioners will be fluent in Clean Needle Technique, precautions, and contraindications, along with appropriate needle depth/angle and techniques for each muscle treated.
